Compared with sinusoidal power supply, variable speed drive will produce higher electrical pressure stress on the motor windings, and may form high frequency shaft voltage and bearing current. Therefore, the dimensions of the motor winding and bearing insulation and the filter on the converter output element must be indicated in accordance with the “VSD Application Scope/Insulation Selection Specification” (3GZF 500930-2), which can be obtained from ABB.
In variable speed drives, the motor (Pn >30 kW) must be connected with a shielded symmetrical cable and a cable seal tube that provides 360 (i.e. an EMC cable seal tube).
In the application of frequency converters, in order to balance the potential between the motor frame and the driving machine, the motor frame must be externally grounded. Unless both are installed on the same metal base level.
Motors with a frame above IEC280 shall use a 0.75 x 70 mm strip lead or at least two 50mm2 round leads. Circular wires should be at least 150mm away from each other.
