是PLC向高性能小型化方向發(fā)展，PLC的功能正越來越豐富，而體積則越來越小。比如三菱的FX-IS系列PLC，最小的機(jī)種，體積僅為60×90×75mm，相當(dāng)于一個(gè)繼電器大小，但卻具有高速計(jì)數(shù)、斜坡、交替輸出及16位四則運(yùn)算等能力，還具有可調(diào)電位器時(shí)間設(shè)定功能。

PLC已不再是早期那種只能進(jìn)行開關(guān)量邏輯運(yùn)算的產(chǎn)品了，而是具有越來越強(qiáng)的模擬量處理能力，以及其他過去只有在計(jì)算機(jī)上才能具有的高級處理能力，如浮點(diǎn)數(shù)運(yùn)算、PID調(diào)節(jié)、溫度控制、精確定位、步進(jìn)驅(qū)動(dòng)、報(bào)表統(tǒng)計(jì)等。從這種意義上說，PLC系統(tǒng)與DCS（集散控制系統(tǒng)）的差別越來越小了，用PLC同樣可以構(gòu)成一個(gè)過程控制系統(tǒng)。

PLC is no longer the kind of products that can only carry out switching logic operations in the early days, but has more and more strong analog processing capabilities, as well as other advanced processing capabilities that can only be had on the computer in the past, such as floating point arithmetic, PID regulation, temperature control, precise positioning, step drive, report statistics, etc. In this sense, the difference between PLC system and DCS (distributed control system) is getting smaller and smaller, and PLC can also constitute a process control system.
