The VME bus is a general-purpose computer bus that combines the electrical standard of MOTOROLA’s versa bus with the standard mechanical form factor established in Europe and is an open architecture. It defines a system for interconnecting data processing, data storage, and peripheral control devices in a tightly coupled hardware architecture. The VME data transmission mechanism is asynchronous, with multiple bus cycles, address widths of 16, 24, 32, 40 or 64 bits, and data line widths of 86, 24, 32 and 64 bits, so it is only subject to the signal exchange protocol and does not depend on the system clock, because it is a combination of the two standards.

The VME system can also be seen as two parts, one is its mechanical architecture, which determines the size of the backplane, front panel and embedded board of the VME bus system, and the other is the functional architecture, which defines the operation process of the system. VME bus family has three forms: VM64, VM64X, VM320. After years of transformation and upgrading, the VME system has developed very well, and the products developed around it have covered the fields of industrial control, military systems, aerospace, transportation and medical treatment.
