RIO600 supports flexible use of remote I/O
The RIO600 Remote I/O unit, designed to extend digital and analog I/O from ABB’s Relion? family of protective relays, delivers I/O to the substation automation unit COM600 using IEC 61850 communications and grid automation applications.
The device provides strong I/O flexibility and enables seamless IEC 61850 connections between switching and analog signals in the substation. One of the advantages of using the RIO600 remote I/O unit is that it helps simplify and reduce wiring inside the substation. In a traditional, fully hard-wired medium voltage switchgear/substation control and protection system, you’ll find a lot of I/O wiring. However, these additional inputs and outputs provided by the RIO600 unit can be distributed directly within the switchgear.
For grid automation applications, the RIO600 remote I/O unit provides Fault channel indication (FPI). The RIO600 leverages ABB’s lightweight sensor technology to accurately measure current and voltage in medium-voltage grids. The RIO600 gives a directional fault channel indication based on the measured values and reports it to the upper layer system using Modbus TCP or IEC 61850. The RIO600 also supports power flow and power quality monitoring. With advanced multi-frequency admittance (MFA) based ground fault indications, high-resistance transient and intermittent ground faults can be reliably detected even in compensated and isolated grids.
The RIO600 remote I/O unit contains web technology-based capabilities to access devices and processes within the substation through a web browser-based human machine interface (WebHMI). All standard substation monitoring can be handled using WebHMI.
