In the way terminal I/O works, there are two different modes of operation: canonical mode input processing and non-standard mode input processing. In canonical mode input processing, terminal input is processed in behavioral units, and each read request returns a maximum of one line of data. In non-canonical mode input processing, input characters are not assembled into lines and can be returned to the program immediately.
