When the object rotates, the light source emits light that hits the grating or the code disk. If the light passes through the protrusion, the photoelectric sensor senses the bright light and outputs a high level signal; If the light passes through the groove, the photoelectric sensor senses the weak light and outputs a low level signal. This way, scanning each scale one by one gives a complete binary code representing the Angle or position of the rotation.

The encoder module is widely used in car audio, oscilloscope, mouse and other equipment, can output pulse counting through forward and reverse rotation, and rotation counting is no limit, its operating voltage is 5 volts.

In addition, the YOKOGAWA VI451-10 multi-turn encoder expands the measurement range by increasing the number of gears and dials. The incremental rotary encoder converts the timing and phase relationship of the Angle codec through two photosensitive tubes inside, and the Angle displacement of the Angle codec increases (positive direction) or decreases (negative direction).
